Winnunga Nimmityjah Health Services means Strong Health
Winnunga Nimmityjah Today
Winnunga Nimmityjah today is a clear product of the consistent growth and engagement that marks Winnunga’s history. From those small beginnings, Winnunga now employs 55 staff. From the beginnings of just a small clinical and administrative team, Winnunga has grown to include General Health Services, Social Health, Substance Misuse, Health Program Support, Medical Services and Financial teams. Such growth, and the specific focus it has allowed each team to develop, means that Winnunga is constantly improving the services it is able to offer the Canberra Aboriginal community.
Both psychiatrists and psychologists now form an integral part of Winnunga’s services. Additionally, Winnunga has grown to offer support to expectant mothers, through the midwifery team, parents who are struggling or just need some advice, smokers who wish to quite and many others. Highly successful women’s and men’s groups are now facilitated, demonstrating Winnunga’s continual commitment to proactive health care. (Examples of the art produced by the women’s art group can be viewed on the website at http://www.winnunga.org.au/index.php?page=womens-art-group)
But Winnunga’s position today not only reflects it staffing growth, but a continual move towards providing the best possible facilities to house these services. We moved into our current Narrabundah site in September 2005, and are currently undertaking site renovations to provide those who use our services, along with staff, with greater comfort.
Winnunga today is a thriving service, consistently examining better ways in which to serve the local Aboriginal community. We are very proud of what we have achieved and where we are today, and hope that in the future we can continue to best serve those who need us most.
