DIABETES
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a problem where the body is unable to control
how much glucose is in the blood.
This happens because an organ called the PANCREAS does not
make enough INSULIN or the the INSULIN that is made isn't working well
because we may be carrying too much fat on our body.
INSULIN is a hormone and its job is to keep the level of
glucose in our blood normal.
Diabetes can lead to the body's BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS going
too high and this can damage the body in lots of ways, including the heart,
kidneys, eyes, feet and teeth.
What can cause Diabetes?
Diabetes is NOT caused by eating too much sugar.
You are more at risk of getting diabetes if you:
Are too fat (especially if you are fat around the belly).
Are over 35 years.
Have a relative who has diabetes.
Have had gestational diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy)
Could I have Diabetes?
Some of the signs of diabetes include:
Being very thirsty.
Weeing a lot - even at night.
Feeling tired.
Having blurry eyes.
Having sores that won't heal (eg. boils).
Should I have a test for Diabetes?
All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 18 years should
have a test for diabetes every year because lots of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people get diabetes.
Finding out if you have diabetes is very important so you can stop it
damaging your body.
The Staff at Winnunga Nimmityjah can help you organise to have a
diabetes test.
How can you look after yourself if you have diabetes?
1. Eat better food & don't drink too much alcohol
2. Get more active
Walk more is one of the best ways to stay healthy.
3. Don't smoke
Smoking causes many serious health problems, especially for people with
diabetes. Winnunga runs "No more boondah" a quit smoking program.
4. Taking medication properly
If you have to take tablets or insulin to keep your blood sugars normal
it is very important to take them as directed by your doctor. Only a small
number of people will need to have injections of insulin.
5. Try to find ways to help with stress
If you are stressed it is hard to look after your diabetes. Winnunga
Nimmityjah have social and emotional well-being counsellors who can help.
Remember!
you can still have diabetes and not feel sick... so have a check up once
a year.
